EU External Relations

This course surveys the development of the EU and its relations with three external actors. ‘The European Union today uses its European External Action service mechanism and Foreign and Security Policy  in its foreign relations with the United States, Russia, and Israel. The cooperation and varying degrees of integration meanwhile showcase how the EU is responding collectively to important challenges faced in its politico-economic  global environment. This course is divided in three parts. The first analyses the impact of the EU-USA relationship specifically economic, political and social perspectives; while the second part focuses on the problems of the current ‘European model’—built around the European Union ENP and EaP—in relationship to Russia as a hybrid threat; whereas the third part explores the EU-Israeli relationship and the differences between supranational and national policy within political and social perspectives, including contemporary Antisemitism.
